Campaign Cartographer 4 Crowdfunding

CC4 Map ExampleWe’ll shortly be crowdfunding a new version of Campaign Cartographer 4, along with new versions of Dungeon Designer and City Designer. If you are an existing user, we’ll send you a link to a secret backer level with a modest discount if you are signed up to our newsletter.

The latest version of our legendary map-making software, CC4, features:

  • An updated interface with improved dialog boxes, icons and a shiny new sidebar which gives you access to settings and information to assist your work flow.
  • Virtual Table Top support which includes major VTT platforms, with full support for light sources.
  • Entirely new map styles with symbols and fill styles handcrafted for overland, dungeon and city maps.
  • Automated creation of dungeons, villages and towns, so you can get started on your map-making in minutes – not based on generative AI.
  • Automatic river creation with natural flows and tapering width,

Your backing will mean more and better features – and we have an extensive wish list! More symbols, more styles, more features.

    Hi Simon,

While we wait for the secret link, I figured I’d ask:
Will the new version be 64-bit? Will it take advantage of multiple cores/threads and/or GPU?

PS: Loving the new art already!

  2. Anthony Fenton

Will you make this available for Linux, also.

  3. Shaun Klinefelter

I’m running CC3+ through Crossover and it’s working, but it’d be nice if there was possibly a Mac silicon version for CC4.

  4. Justa

Any chance that CC4 will have a native Linux port ?
I am enjoying CC3+ in Wine; but larger maps greatly suffer slowdowns in rendering due to Wine concentrating on game-related graphics-pipelines and the ‘native windows’ drawing is slowwwwww.. Even on 16Core with 4090, nvme, etc..

  5. ska Smith

I’m with Gonzo on that! 64-bit and multi-core/threading, please!

  6. Simon Cornelius

Not being a big user of symbols for overland maps, preferring a look similar to Ordnance Survey maps, will there be new styles along such lines?

  7. Lobo

Not based on AI. As if I needed another reason to love this software (even if I don’t use it as much as I would like)

Loving the visual so far, and waiting to see CC4 coming up.

  8. Bsieger

Wow excellent news. While not a advid user anymore will certainly help fund this product.

  9. Simon Scrivener

The new art vibe is awesome. Very excited for a new release

  10. Jim Abbott

Liking what I see folks. This should be awesome!

I agree with other posters 64-bit, cross platform (including Intel based Mac’s) would be awesome and a no brainer support from me. I’ll probably support it anyway but…

  11. Mike H.

Also wanting a Mac silicon version for CC4!

  12. Cyryl

Curious about existing assets… Will CC4 be backwards compatible and allow using previous symbol catalogues, annuals, etc.? I got all the stuff but merely began getting into the software…

  13. ralf

Yes, you will be able to use old assets and maps in CC4. Not everything right from the start, but we’ll be creating compatibility updates like we did from CC3 to CC3+.

  14. ralf

Definitely no to AI artwork, correct!

  15. ralf

The situation with running the software under Linux/Mac will remain largely the same.

I hope that you reconsider Linux support, While Windows is still the obvious OS market lead Linux is on a slow but steady rise with currently 5% of all Steam installs depending on linux with a steadily rising trend. Microsoft is currently in a bad standing with a growing list of people with their AI push and updates often breaking some stuff. Furthermore Linux users can often be more willing to spend money and are often capable of writing high quality bug reports.

  18. John LeRoy

When will we be able to get on a list to be reminded of the launch of the crowdfunding?

  19. Scott Aniolowski

Any hint on when this will happen, beyond “shortly”?

  20. Scott Aniolowski

Will this CC$ just install over CC3+, or will it be a completely new install? Will third-party symbols and menu buttons remain, or will they have to be installed all over again?

  21. Carlos

Please make a native Linux version and do NOT add any AI crap.

  22. ralf

Sorry, I have no specific dates yet.

  23. ralf

It will be a completely new install, but with the same type of architecture. That means you can just copy third party material over to the new location.

  24. ralf

We will make sure to let everybody know!

  25. Gonzo

    @ralf – any comments on the 64-bit / multi-core / GPU support?

  26. Simon Rogers

We are not using generative AI or LLMs in our software – it’s all human crafted.

CC4 is currently a 64-bit / 32-bit hybrid which uses the multi-core and GPU functionality in the new renderer. We are aiming to expand this, which depends on funding levels, priorities and time constraints.

We are not Linux or Mac developers, so CC4 will not support either platform natively. If things go exceptionally well, then we’ll consider crowdfunding for these plaforms and if they hit their targets, we’ll develop them.

  27. Greg Buckles

Putting in a vote for a web viewer for hosted maps or a more web compatible export like MVT. extension of hyperlinks to all named objects for better interaction. The VTT integration may cover this, but I always prefer to minimize the number of systems/tables that have to be synchronized.

  28. leakypen

Very exciting. I’ll be backing the crowdfunding effort.

    Keen on:
    [] No AI. Ever.
[] 64-bit Linux application. Win 11 is malware poorly disguised as bloatware. Switched exclusively to Linux (Debian, MX Linux) last year and never looked back.

  29. Nylanfs

I wonder if you could reach out to the FreeCAD team and see how they are handling the multi-os builds? Just thinking that because they are both CAD based systems.

  30. Gregory

Why not develop it so that it runs well under Wine? You can add support more easily that way, and not have to become “Linux Developers”. I’ve noticed a huge increase in people asking for Linux versions of software from boutique vendors, and expect the trend to accelerate with future Windows developments disappointing non-mainstream users. Please don’t lock yourself in for the next decade.

  31. BwenGun

Will definitely be backing, the rivers on their own look awesome and hopefully it will pair with another big performance increase in the same way the jump from 3 to 3+ did!

Any chance of an even further expanded Mike Schley set of symbols? In particular I’d love more ancient feeling cities and ruins with a neolithic/bronze age feel to them. But I suspect I may be a minority in my desire and will be looking forward to whatever comes. =)

  32. ralf

Thanks, we’ll certainly looking at expanding Mike’s style even further in the future!

  33. Simon Rogers

CC3+ runs under Wine with a Gold rating. CC4 will probably run under Wine, too, but no guarantees at this stage.

City Designer 4 artwork will be created by Mike Schley.

  34. Christian Treczoks

What I would like to see:

    * A native Linux port – obviously. Yes, it runs under Wine, but it could run much better. Or, if that is not possible, at least make sure it runs well under Wine.
    * SVG (Inkscape) import and export.

  35. mek42

Has someone gotten CC3+ to install via Crossover on M4 mac? When I tried it was misidentified as a crossword program and failed to install.

  36. ralf

You might want to check on our community forum, there are several people there who run CC3+ on the Mac:

I’m late to the party but better late than never! I am SO looking forward to CC4! I will keep my eyes open for the crowdfunding notice, and you can darn well bet I’m going to back it.

Can’t wait to see what’s ahead!

    Erik
